Astronomy

was a big deal to the pre-Columbian cultures of Peru. The sun itself was considered the progenitor of the Incas, and the appearance of certain constellations in the night sky announced the arrival of the rainy season or harvest time. Last night as I returned from a tour of the "sacred valley", I looked out the window and there was the big dipper, larger and brighter than I had ever seen it... and upside down.

when i was on my mish, i was too far south to see the big dipper and really, really missed it. when i was flying back to the states, i looked outside of the plane and saw the big dipper and was so excited that i woke up my companion and made her look. it was so bright and beautiful that it almost made me happy to be going home. then i looked down at the dark abyss below and realized that i could see the lights emanating from La Habana and thought, "wow, this is an amazingly beautiful sight."
